Utility Scams

During the colder months, there is generally a rise in utility scams. Fraudsters will pose as utility companies to take advantage of customers who rely on services to stay warm over the winter. They may offer help to sign up for programs to reduce energy bills or offer a free energy audit. Some scammers will threaten to cut off service claiming that there is an overdue bill or maintenance cost that must be paid immediately. The goal of these imposters is to get people to send a payment to them directly or to gain personal or financial information that may be sold or used to open new accounts.

It is important to know that utility companies do not ask for personal information by telephone or email. They also will not ask for payment by purchasing gift cards or using a bitcoin ATM. Utility companies will also provide advance warning before disconnecting services.

If a message is received by email, telephone, or text claiming that utility services will be disconnected or that payment is overdue, contact the utility company directly. Use the telephone number provided on the utility bill or contact them through the company's online portal by going directly to the company's website.

Report utility scams to the actual utility company and to law enforcement. Information may also be shared with the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/ or by calling (877‍) 382‍-‍4357.
