Prepare for an Interview

Once you have reviewed the job description and determined that you meet the qualifications and qualities that the employer is looking for, it is important to assess how you are qualified and why you want the job. Next are a few basic steps to take in preparing for an interview.

Research the company and the role

It is important to have a basic understanding of what the company does and the products or services that it provides. Whether the role is directly related to the product or service, the position will still be a part of the overall team that contributes to the strategy around it.

Understand the responsibilities and requirements of the role. In addition to the job description, research similar roles to gain an idea of the day-to-day activities. Clarification of the role can be asked for during the interview.

Social media and blogs may provide insight to the company’s industry and culture. It is important to determine whether there is a good fit between you and the company’s personality and values. No matter how good the role seems, if the fit is not right, your career with the company will not be long-term.

Prepare answers to common interview questions

While it isn’t possible to predict every question that the interviewer will ask, there are some common questions to plan for such as, “What interests you about this role?” “Why do you want to work here?” and “What are your strengths?” Questions more specific to the role may be found online. Consider crafting an introduction that briefly and succinctly describes who you are, what you do, and your goals. Research the salary range for the role, if it was not provided in the job description, and be prepared to discuss salary expectations.

Prepare questions for the interviewer

Thoughtful questions will show that you have researched the company and are familiar with the role. Clarifying questions can also help to determine whether the company will be a good fit for you. Remember that while the employer is trying to assess if you are right for them, you are assessing whether the company is right for you.

During the interview, making a lasting and positive impression is important. Use open body language and a friendly and confident speaking voice.

After the interview, follow up with the employer. A follow-up shows the employer that you are genuinely interested in the position, reminds them of your conversation, and provides an opportunity to mention additional points that you may have forgotten to speak to during the interview.
