Navigating Home Health Care

Sometimes, when caring for our veteran, we need assistance. Maybe there has been a change in the condition of our family member following a hospitalization or perhaps a shift in our own health, family, or work life. Seeking help is nothing to be ashamed of and many caregivers and family members are realizing that they become better equipped to fulfill the role of caregiver when they hand over care to a trusted professional at times.

Homecare can be temporary during recovery from an injury or illness or it can be an ongoing need for veterans with permanent disabilities or chronic illness. There are many options for home healthcare available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and in the civilian community to receive the assistance needed.

Home Healthcare usually begins in the hospital following a health event, accident, or injury. Upon discharge, the doctor will write an order, and the Hospital Case Manager or Social Worker will set up the necessary in-home care. Visiting nurses, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are some of the skilled services available. A Homemaker for companionship and housekeeping assistance and Home Health Aides to assist with activities of daily living such as bathing and meal prep, feeding, or respite care may also be assigned.

When searching for Home Healthcare, compare reviews by doing an Internet search and obtain referrals from a trusted physician and friends. Call a home health agency directly and they should walk through the process to get care started. Home Healthcare can be expensive. Going through insurance is highly recommended.
