Military Formal 101: Appropriate Attire

When attending a military formal, demonstrating proper etiquette applies to not only behavior but also to dress. The dress code at a military formal is...well, formal. Service members will typically don their dress uniforms. Guests will be in formal attire. Dressing appropriately shows respect for the occasion, for the host, and for the other guests in attendance.

Men's formal dress is elegant ranging from a classic black or dark midnight blue tuxedo to a dark suit with clean, sleek lines and a no-frills dress shirt. An optional waistcoat will add a little bit more style. Black tie events will require a bow tie otherwise, a chic neck tie will suffice. Leather dress shoes in black, brown, or burgundy matching the belt will bring the ensemble together nicely.

Women's formal dress is more varied. Formal dresses are typically floor length. In some cases, tea length (mid-length, extending below the knees to about mid-calf) dresses are suitable. Be wary of plunging necklines which may not be appropriate. Select styles that will suit the occasion and the culture.

Remember that military formals are meant to honor the military service and the members of that service. How you look and behave represents not just yourself but also the person that you are accompanying.
