Helping Children Navigate PCS Moves

Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves are an inevitable part of life in military families. As challenging as it can be for adults, it can be especially difficult for children who must adapt to new environments, schools, and friends. There are strategies and emotional support techniques to help children cope with PCS moves and thrive in their new surroundings.

Acknowledge and Validate Feelings

Children may experience a range of emotions from sadness and anxiety to excitement. Encourage communication and create a safe space for them to express their emotions. Acknowledge their feelings and reassure them that it is normal to feel a mix of emotions during times of change.

Involve Children in the Process

A sense of involvement can help children feel more in control and vested in the transition. Include them in decisions such as choosing their new bedroom decor and researching activities in the new location.

Maintain Routine and Familiarity

Familiar routines can provide children with a sense of stability and security. Try to keep consistent bedtime routines, meal times, and family traditions. Familiar items such as favorite toys, books, or blankets will help children feel grounded in their new environment.

Explore the New Community Together

Take the time to explore the new community as a family. Visit local parks, stores, and attractions and encourage children to ask questions and express their interests. Involve them in finding activities where they can meet new friends.

Foster Support Networks and Connections

Building a support network is essential for both parents and children. Connect with support groups and reach out to other military families in the area. Participate in community and school activities and get to know others who have shared experiences.

Remember that every child is unique. Be patient while providing support through this journey of change. Create new memories and adventures together.
