Updated: Oct 8, 2024

Celebration of Independence Day often includes fireworks. Awareness of basic safety will help maximize the fun while minimizing the risk so that everyone has a great 4th of July.

  • Keep fireworks away from young children. Young children should never handle fireworks. Older children should always be closely supervised by an adult when using fireworks.

  • Never use fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Protective eyewear should always be used by anyone handling fireworks.

  • Light fireworks outdoors and never hold a lit firework. Use fireworks away from people, houses, and flammable materials.

  • Light fireworks one at a time. Maintain a safe distance after lighting a firework and never point it or throw it at another person.

  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to extinguish malfunctioning fireworks.

  • Dispose fireworks properly. Soak used and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.
