Getting Ready to Retire from the Military

When retiring from the military, it is recommended to start preparations two years in advance. According to Military One Source, some things that should be considered when planning for retirement are:

  • Initial Counseling and Pre-Separation Counseling Brief: An Individualized Initial Counseling session and Pre-Separation Counseling Brief needs to be completed at least 365 days prior to the service member's date of separation. This appointment may be scheduled up to 24 months before retirement date.

  • Final Medical Exam: Final medical and dental exams are mandatory. Schedule appointments no later than 90 days before the date of separation. It is recommended to schedule well ahead since appointment availability may be limited. NOTE: Make sure to obtain copies of all medical and dental records.

  • Core Transition Curriculum: Mandatory briefings on transition preparation, employment preparation, and benefits offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs must be attended. These sessions include information on defining and translating military skills to civilian jobs and financial planning.

  • Final Move: Government-paid move anywhere within the United States or to the service member's home of record outside the country may be utilized within one year from the date of retirement. It is recommended to schedule as soon as possible for a better chance of getting desired dates.
