Fun in the Sun Safety Tips

While having fun this summer, it is important to take precautions to protect yourself from UV radiation that can be harmful. Follow these simple steps to maximize the fun and minimize the risks.

  • Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. whenever possible. This is when its rays are the strongest.

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 every day. Use sunscreen on cloudy days too because UV rays can penetrate through clouds.

  • Use lip balm with a minimum SPF of 30.

  • Wear long sleeves, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat for protection.

  • Wear sunglasses that have at least 99% UVA and UBV ray protection.

  • Take advantage of shade whenever possible. Use an umbrella.

  • Avoid reflective areas. Sand, pavement, water, and snow reflect the sun’s rays and can still be harmful.

Harmful UV radiation can increase the risk of skin cancer. Take the time to prepare for the day by incorporating the above steps into your daily routine. The benefits far out-weigh the risks.
