Assistance for Family Caregivers

The family caregiver plays an important role in the wellness and health of veterans. The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) is available to family caregivers of eligible veterans.

The family caregiver may be eligible if they are at least 18 years old and either a spouse, child, parent, step-family member, or an extended family member of the veteran living with the veteran. The veteran for whom the family caregiver is providing care must have a VA disability rating of 70% or higher, was discharged from the U.S. military or has a date of medical discharge, and needs at least six months of continuous, personal care.

An eligible veteran can appoint a primary family caregiver and up to two secondary family caregivers to support the primary caregiver when needed. Caregivers can receive caregiver training and education, mental health counseling, and financial aid when traveling with the veteran.

The family caregiver and the veteran must apply for the program together. More information about the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) and how to apply is available at https://www.va.gov/family-member-benefits/comprehensive-assistance-for-family-caregivers/.
